Find the complete VIN
The 17-character vehicle identification number is commonly visible at the lower windshield or on the driver-side door label. It is also on registration or insurance documents. Verify the characters before searching; one wrong character can produce the wrong result.
NHTSA’s official recall page can check for open safety recalls by VIN and offers other ways to follow recalls. Do not post the full VIN with your phone number in a public comment.
Read the result carefully
A lookup can show an unrepaired safety recall for that vehicle. Follow the details and contact the manufacturer’s authorized dealer to ask about parts, remedy and scheduling. NHTSA states that safety recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealer.
If you have a recall notice but the VIN lookup seems different, contact the manufacturer or NHTSA. The site result does not diagnose unrelated maintenance or every possible defect.
Who should you contact about a manufacturer safety-recall remedy?
Keep a record
Save the notice, appointment confirmation and completed remedy invoice. If a recall involves a serious safety concern, follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions about driving and parking until repaired.
When booking other work at M&A, you may tell the advisor about an open recall, but confirm who is authorized to perform the manufacturer recall remedy. An ordinary shop repair is not automatically a recall completion.
Check more than once
A recall can be announced after you buy the vehicle. Set a reminder to check again and keep your contact details current with the manufacturer when possible. NHTSA also offers recall alerts and its SaferCar app.
For a used car, combine recall review with an independent condition check and service-history review. These answer different questions.
