1. Identify the filing and tax year
Find your business entity, asset location and reporting year. Maryland’s Annual Report and personal-property return serve different purposes. Use the current forms and filing checklist at Maryland SDAT; businesses outside Maryland must use their own jurisdiction’s rules.
2. Separate vehicles from other business assets
The 2026 Maryland instructions exclude vehicles registered in Maryland in classes A–P. Unlicensed vehicles and vehicles using interchangeable registrations, such as dealer or transporter plates, can require reporting. Review the precise exceptions before adding commercial vehicles to the asset list.
3. Prepare and submit the records
Organize acquisition dates, original costs and asset locations. Reconcile the list to invoices and bookkeeping, then follow the current form prompts for reportable property. Review the deadline and any extension requirements on the official filing page. Save the submitted return and confirmation.
4. Track follow-up separately
Save assessment notices and local bills with the filing records. Check due dates, corrections and payment instructions on each notice. Ask SDAT or your tax adviser about an uncertain classification before submitting.
