Apply through the IRS
An employer identification number, or EIN, identifies a business for federal tax purposes. Confirm whether your situation requires one; federal requirements depend on the business and its activities. If you are creating an LLC or corporation, the IRS says to form it with the state before applying. Applying directly through the IRS is free. Prepare the responsible party’s information, confirm eligibility for the online tool, and use the business’s approved details. Save the confirmation letter securely and share identifying information only through trusted channels.
Prepare for the bank
Ask the bank for its document list before making an appointment. Common requests include an EIN, formation documents, ownership agreements, and relevant business licenses, but requirements vary. Confirm who can sign and access the account. Compare monthly charges, transaction limits, deposit options, and payment tools against your expected activity. SBA recommends a business bank account when you begin accepting or spending business money. Put customer receipts and business spending through the business account, and document owner contributions or withdrawals so their purpose stays clear.
Which habit makes business records easier to understand?
Create a repeatable money routine
Choose a bookkeeping method that clearly shows income and expenses, and retain documents that support the entries. Save receipts, invoices, bank statements, and explanations for unusual transactions. Set a regular time to reconcile the account and investigate differences. If you pay a business cost personally, record it and ask your accountant how to classify any reimbursement. A bank balance alone does not show profit or cash available for every purpose. Ask a CPA to help organize taxes, owner payments, and reserves.
