Check the starting and charging system
Cold conditions can make a weak starting battery more noticeable. If the car cranks slowly or needed a jump recently, ask for a battery and charging-system evaluation rather than buying a battery without checking the cause.
An EV or hybrid may show reduced range in cold weather. Consult its manual for charging, preconditioning and roadside instructions; high-voltage components are for qualified personnel.
Give visibility its own checklist
Check wiper condition, windshield washer operation and a season-appropriate washer fluid. Clear snow and ice from windows, lights and roof before driving. Do not use a frozen wiper to scrape the windshield.
Check tire pressure when cold against the vehicle placard. Inspect tread and visible damage. All-season and winter tires have different intended uses; ask a tire professional about fit and your driving conditions.
Which information guides cold-weather care?
Plan for delayed travel
NHTSA recommends emergency supplies including a phone and charger, water, food and needed medication. Keep enough fuel or charge for the route and possible delay. Check weather and road conditions before leaving.
If you are stuck, focus on a safe location and emergency help. Tell any roadside provider the vehicle type, precise location, access conditions and whether passengers need urgent assistance.
Use the manual for vehicle-specific steps
Ask which fluids, maintenance and traction equipment the manufacturer approves. Tire chains, towing methods and jump-start procedures vary by vehicle; a generic winter checklist cannot replace those instructions.
A winter visit is a good moment to address an existing warning or leak. Request a written scope and estimate for repairs, then save the result with the car’s maintenance record.
