EV & hybrid ownership basics
Know the safety boundaries and what to ask before arranging service or a tow.
Read the lesson, then check your understanding.Identify the vehicle before arranging help
A battery-electric vehicle, a plug-in hybrid and a conventional hybrid do not have identical systems. Share the exact year, make and model when requesting service or roadside help. Follow the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific charging, lifting and towing instructions.
Do not open high-voltage components or handle damaged cables. NHTSA advises treating high-voltage systems as energized after an incident. If you see damage, leaking material, unusual heat, smoke or hear concerning sounds following a crash, keep away and contact emergency responders. Tell them the vehicle is electric or hybrid.
Ask the shop about the exact work
Ask whether the team has the qualifications, equipment and procedures for the requested service on your model. Being able to replace a tire is different from being equipped to work on a high-voltage battery. Do not assume all advertised automotive services apply to every EV.
This lesson is ownership education, not a claim that M&A currently offers every EV, battery or ADAS service. Call the team before booking specialized work. If the needed capability is unavailable, ask about an appropriate next step rather than booking a general slot.
Keep clear records of electronic and mechanical work
Save diagnostic findings, charging concerns, software-related service notes and routine maintenance records together. Record when an issue occurs, such as with a particular charger or after a recent visit, without attempting to recreate a dangerous condition.
When asking about battery health, request the measurement, test method and limitations rather than accepting a single unexplained percentage. A maintenance recommendation or dashboard range estimate is not proof of a failed battery. Keep tires, brakes and other scheduled items on the maintenance plan using the manufacturer’s guidance.
Your next-visit checklist
- Share the exact EV or hybrid model.
- Leave high-voltage systems to qualified personnel.
- Confirm capability before specialized booking.
- Keep test results with their method and limitations.
Check your understanding.
