Start with identity and history
Confirm the VIN on the vehicle matches the paperwork. Review available history, title information and seller disclosures before becoming emotionally committed to the car.
Check the warning lights correctly
All expected warning lamps should illuminate during the key-on self-test and then behave normally after startup. A missing or permanently illuminated lamp deserves investigation.
Look, listen and smell
Check for fluid leaks, uneven tire wear, smoke, unusual engine noise, water or mildew odor, mismatched paint and signs of rushed body repair.
Still get an independent inspection
A quick buyer check is not a substitute for lifting the vehicle, scanning systems, measuring wear and performing an appropriate road test before purchase.
