Quick note: This guide helps you understand the issue and prepare for service. It is not a vehicle-specific diagnosis.
1
Condition matters more than appearance
Measure tread depth across the tire and inspect both sidewalls, the bead area and the inner liner. Hidden damage can be missed when only the outside is viewed.
2
Check age and prior repairs
The DOT date code helps identify tire age. Repairs should be evaluated for location and quality; shoulder and sidewall damage generally requires replacement.
3
Match the vehicle
Size, load rating, speed rating and overall circumference must be appropriate for the vehicle and compatible with the other tires.
