A Check Engine Code Is Not a Parts List

Quick note: This guide helps you understand the issue and prepare for service. It is not a vehicle-specific diagnosis.
1

What the code does

A diagnostic trouble code points to a system, circuit or operating condition detected by the vehicle. It does not prove that one named component has failed.

2

How diagnosis should proceed

Technicians review freeze-frame data, service information, wiring, live values and physical test results. This reduces unnecessary parts replacement.

3

When to stop driving

A flashing light, severe shaking, overheating, low oil pressure or loss of power can indicate a condition that should be addressed immediately.
