Quick note: This guide helps you understand the issue and prepare for service. It is not a vehicle-specific diagnosis.
1
Follow the correct specification
The engine requires a particular viscosity and performance specification. Using the wrong oil can be more harmful than choosing between two arbitrary mileage intervals.
2
Driving conditions matter
Short trips, long idling, towing, extreme temperatures and stop-and-go use can justify more frequent service than ideal highway driving.
3
Use the visit to look ahead
An oil service is a useful time to review leaks, fluids, tires, lights and maintenance due soon so repairs can be planned instead of becoming emergencies.
