Protect the engine and people
Do not open a hot cooling system. Steam and pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Keep clear and arrange help if the vehicle cannot be moved safely.

Do not keep driving to see if it improves
Continued overheating can turn a hose, fan or coolant-loss problem into major engine damage. A tow is often cheaper than the consequences.

Diagnosis must find the cause
Possible causes include leaks, cooling fans, thermostat, water pump, airflow, belt drive or engine problems. Adding coolant without finding the leak may only delay another overheat.
